What Chelsea have told senior players privately about summer transfer plans

Over the past four seasons, Chelsea have enjoyed very little success. In fact, despite spending record sums of money, BlueCo have not been able to put together a team that can consistently qualify for the Champions League. Competing for the big trophies feels like a distant dream at this point. And if the Blues are not careful, they might lose their tag as a ‘big club’ soon enough.

BlueCo have overlooked the need for experience and proven quality during their four years of ownership. Instead, they have constantly signed youngsters. The issue is, you can never predict how potentail will turn out.

A lot of these youngsters have failed to meet expectations. Even those who have often struggle in big games. When was the last time Chelsea consistently beat the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, or even Manchester United?

It is very clear that change is needed. Even the likes of Marc Cucurella have come out and said that. But are BlueCo willing to make those changes? Or will they stubbornly stick to a failing transfer model?

What Chelsea’s senior players have been told about the club’s transfer plans

There seems to be some positive news on that front. If reports coming out are true, it looks like BlueCo are willing to tweak their transfer policy.

According to a report from Nizaar Kinsella on BBC Sport, Chelsea remain in regular dialogue with senior players. The club also accept some criticism, including Cucurella’s comments.

Senior players are aware of the club’s summer plans, which is why Reece James referred to those discussions after his most recent contract renewal. Experienced signings are expected at centre‑back, in central midfield and in attack.

Chelsea looking to sign ‘experienced’ players in the summer

It looks like Chelsea want to bring in more Premier League-proven and experienced players in the summer. But how do you define that?

In recent weeks, some reports have pointed towards the signing of Joao Pedro as an example. But he was a 23-year-old coming off an underwhelming campaign when signed by Chelsea. The club need to be aiming higher when it comes to their summer recruits.

Do not get us wrong, Pedro has done a decent job. But he is not the player who will come in and help mature this squad. Or someone who would immediately turn Chelsea into Premier League contenders. The Blues need truly world-class talents for that to happen.

Of course, the club are believed to be closing in on the signing of Valentin Barco from Strasbourg. That is the kind of move they have constantly made over the last four years. So, BlueCo are not completely moving away from their model. But it seems like they might be willing to adjust.
