Reports emerged a few days earlier that Liam Delap wanted to remain at Chelsea and fight for his place in the team. Well, it might be about to get a lot tougher for him. Nicolas Jackson is set to return from his loan spell at Bayern Munich. Emmanuel Emegha is set to arrive in the summer as well. And now, it looks like the Blues have their sights set on a Premier League Golden Boot contender.
Joao Pedro has earned a lot of plaudits for his performances this season. In reality, he has blown hot and cold throughout the campaign.
Pedro started off brilliantly before his form faded. He would then go on an incredible run when Liam Rosenior arrived at the club, only for him to endure a dry spell in front of goal once again. If Chelsea want to compete for the biggest prizes, they need some genuine competiion for the Brazilian at the very least.
Interestingly, it looks like they have set their sights on one of his international teammates. But it will take an absolute fortune to sign him.
Chelsea interested in signing Igor Thiago from Brentford
According to ESPN Brasil (via PYS), Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are two European clubs that made an enquiry for Brentford striker Igor Thiago. The expected transfer price is believed to be around £80 million.
Thiago has enjoyed a brilliant season. He has scored 21 goals in the Premier League this season. Across all competitions, he has found the back of the net 24 times in 36 appearances.
Also, contrary to popular belief, Thiago cannot be called a one-season wonder. He has a proven track record of scoring. He has scored 20 or more goals in a season for Ludogorets as well as Club Brugge in the past.
Would Thiago be a good signing?
Thiago is a natural goalscorer for sure. The Blues don’t have on at the moment. But even then, that fee seems extremely steep. For that kind of figure, Chelsea would be much better off trying their luck with Julian Alvarez.
It remains to be seen how the situation develops. It might end up depending on who Chelsea can move in the summer as well.
Let’s not forget, they will have five options up top come the end of the season. They are expected to part with two or three, before they can consider making any moves, especially of that magnitude.
