When Andrea Cambiaso was linked with a move to Chelsea, it made sense. The Juventus left-back is someone who does fit the style of football that Xabi Alonso likes to play. It is not hard to see that he could fit the role that Alejandro Grimaldo had in the Spaniard’s Bayer Leverkusen side which achieved so much.
On the other hand, Marc Cucurella has also been linked with a move away from Chelsea for quite some time. He is viewed as someone who the club would be willing to let go for the right transfer offer. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are viewed as possible destinations.
Of course, if Cucurella does leave, Chelsea would need to bring in a replacement. Just Jorrel Hato would not be enough to fill his void. As a result, it would make sense to pursue a move for Cambiaso.
Unfortunately, though, it looks like there is nothing to those rumours. According to Fabrizio Romano, there have been no talks so far between Chelsea and Cambiaso despite reports this week. Barcelona have been tracking the Juventus player for months among three options for the left-back position this summer.
Chelsea move will depend completely on Marc Cucurella’s future
It will be very interesting to see if Chelsea end up signing another left-back this summer. One would imagine that completely depends on the situation of Cucurella.
If he leaves, they almost have to. But it is not guaranteed that he will. It is believed that Chelsea would be looking for a transfer fee in the region of £60 million.
There are not too many clubs in the world that can shell out that kind of money to sign a left-back. It might be steep, even for Barca and Atletico.
So, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Cucurella. The left-back situation is going to depend on that for sure. There have been suggestions that Alonso would like for him to stay, which might sway the matter as well.
Other areas might be more important
As things stand, Chelsea have enough quality in that position. Cucurella had an inconsistent season. But on his day, he is one of the best in Europe. Alonso might be able to bring that back out of him.
On the other hand, Hato’s improvement in the second half of the season deserves a ton of credit. He went from looking like another transfer flop to one of the best signings BlueCo have made.
So, if things stay the same, there is no reason to make changes at left-back. It would be much more important to target other areas.
One of them is a centre-back. And perhaps there are a few centre-backs in Serie A, who could actually be great additions in that area of the pitch for Chelsea.
