Chelsea target Gudmundsson makes feelings clear over summer move

Gabriel Gudmundsson has described Chelsea’s reported interest as “nice” but insists he remains happy at Leeds United.

Chelsea have identified the Sweden international as a possible option while Xabi Alonso reshapes his full-back positions.

Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid has created a vacancy on the left side of defence. New signing Marco Palestra predominantly operates on the right.

Gudmundsson has now addressed the speculation after helping Leeds retain their Premier League status and representing Sweden at the World Cup.

Gudmundsson responds to Chelsea interest

The 27-year-old told Swedish outlet Hallandsposten that he had paid little attention to transfer reports during a busy summer.

“I haven’t had a focus on it because there has been so much with Leeds, the World Cup and then I have become a father,” Gudmundsson said.

“But it’s nice that they see me as an alternative and it’s a sign that something good has been done.

“Then we’ll see what happens, but I’m happy where I am.”

Chelsea’s interest was first reported during their search for a Cucurella replacement, although Leeds are unlikely to welcome an approach for a regular starter.

Gudmundsson made 32 Premier League appearances during his first season at Elland Road. Injury and suspension accounted for the six matches he missed.

His ability to cover the entire left flank could appeal to Alonso, particularly if Chelsea use different defensive shapes next season.

However, Gudmundsson’s comments offer no indication that he intends to push for a transfer.

Leeds also lack an established left-footed alternative and would require a substantial offer before considering a sale.

Chelsea can take encouragement from Gudmundsson welcoming their interest. His commitment to Leeds, though, suggests any deal would be difficult to complete.
