Chelsea officially announce Max Merrick loan to Hartlepool

Chelsea goalkeeper Max Merrick will spend the 2026/27 season with National League side Hartlepool United.

The loan to Hartlepool gives the 20-year-old another opportunity to gain regular senior experience away from Cobham.

Merrick joined Chelsea at Under-13 level and has become a regular for the club’s Under-21 side. He has featured in Premier League 2, the Premier League International Cup and the EFL Trophy.

The England Under-20 international has also spent considerable time around Chelsea’s senior squad. He has received 11 matchday call-ups and was named on the bench seven times during last season’s Champions League campaign.

Merrick also travelled for the Premier League draw at Manchester City in January. However, a full season in the National League should provide more meaningful development than remaining behind Chelsea’s established first-team goalkeepers.

Chelsea confirmed the season-long agreement on Saturday. Merrick signed a new contract until 2028 in March, underlining the club’s belief in his long-term potential.

Why the Max Merrick loan to Hartlepool makes sense

This will be Merrick’s third spell away from Chelsea. He previously gained senior experience with Hanwell Town before joining Hampton & Richmond during the second half of the 2024/25 season.

Hartlepool can now expose him to the physical and tactical demands of a full National League campaign. Regular football should improve his decision-making, command of the penalty area and ability to manage pressure inside senior matches.

Chelsea continue to use loans to create clearer routes for academy players. ReadChelsea recently covered the club’s decision to secure Ollie Harrison’s future before considering the next stage of his development.

Merrick remains behind Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and other young goalkeepers in Chelsea’s wider plans. The Max Merrick loan to Hartlepool gives him the chance to build a stronger senior record before returning to Cobham next summer.
