Filip Jorgensen has completed a season-long loan to Strasbourg, ending his push for regular minutes at Chelsea before it ever really got going. The Filip Jorgensen Chelsea exit follows months of talks with the club, and the goalkeeper says the decision was his own.
“Ever since January, I knew I wanted to move. I wanted to play every weekend and show what I can do. It means an absolute lot. I am very happy about it,” Jorgensen said.
The 24-year-old joined Chelsea from Villarreal in July 2024 but spent most of his time as understudy to Robert Sanchez. A season largely spent on the bench convinced him that a move away was the only route back to first-team football.
Strasbourg agreement details and early exit timeline
Jorgensen revealed Chelsea had already sounded him out about his plans before the season had even finished. “They asked me two months before the end of the season what I wanted for next season, whether I wanted to stay or whether I wanted to leave. And I just want to play. If I could play regularly at Chelsea, I would like to stay, but if not, I would like to leave,” he explained.
According to a football.london report, the goalkeeper had already informed Chelsea of his wish to depart back in May, well before the summer window opened. He still travelled with the squad to Sydney in July for Chelsea’s pre-season tour under Xabi Alonso, but flew home early once Strasbourg’s loan deal was finalised.
Alonso reshuffles Chelsea goalkeeping department
Jorgensen’s departure is one part of a wider reshuffle in Chelsea’s goalkeeping ranks this summer. Robert Sanchez, the man he had been competing with for the number one shirt, left on loan to Como shortly after Chelsea’s opening-weekend win over Fulham on August 24.
Chelsea moved quickly to fill the gap, signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5million. The Argentine’s arrival gives Alonso an experienced, ready-made option between the posts, and it explains why Jorgensen felt his path to regular football at Stamford Bridge had narrowed rather than widened. Future prospects following season-long loan move
With his move to Strasbourg confirmed for the 2026/27 season, Jorgensen is keeping his focus firmly on the present rather than any return to Chelsea. “I’m not thinking about that right now. I just want to have a good year, and then next summer we’ll see what happens,” he said.
That stance leaves his long-term future unresolved, though regular starts in Ligue 1 are exactly what he had been missing at Chelsea. We covered Jorgensen’s search for regular minutes in detail as his frustration became clear over the summer.
