Chelsea are looking to bring in their next permanent manager this summer. Their previous appointment, Liam Rosenior, will go down as one of the worst in club history. And after four underwhelming seasons since their takeover, BlueCo will know that they need to get this appointment right. They need to be successful on the pitch if they want to improve the Blues’ financial situation, which is not looking good at the moment, as they have painted themselves into a corner with heavy investment in youngsters who have failed to deliver.
This is a squad that has taken north of a billion pounds to put together. And they might be about to finish outside the top half of the Premier League table. That is how wrong BlueCo have gotten it.
There seems to be a recognition that change is needed. The word ‘tweak’ has been thrown around. To be honest, most fans would have preferred ‘revamp’. But it is what it is.
Chelsea handed bad news in their search for manager and players
Unfortunately, it might be a bit too late for the club to turn this around quickly. According to a report from Simon Phillips, managers and players are being put off coming to Chelsea right now due to the many issues the Blues are going through, the low wages they offer, and many other reasons.
Obviously, this is far from ideal. And it could, probably will, result in Chelsea missing out on many of their top targets in the summer, whether it comes to players or managers.
It remains to be seen how Chelsea adjust to this. Will they be able to convince top talent that Stamford Bridge is still the place to be? Or will they have no other choice but to go down the list and bring in third and fourth-choice targets?
What do BlueCo need to do this summer?
The first thing Chelsea need to do this summer is appoint a top manager. It needs to be a statement. Andoni Iraola or Marco Silva would not represent that. Someone like Xabi Alonso might.
Then, they must make sure that the manager gets enough say in the squad build. He must have the final word, not just a mere suggestion that might or might not be overlooked. Whatever the club’s policy has been for the past four years needs to go out of the window.
Then, we could probably start looking at an upward trajectory. If not, let’s be prepared to be in a similar position this time next year as well.
