For many fans, it is vital that Chelsea sign a new goalkeeper this summer. We have already seen Robert Sanchez as number one for three years now. And it might never get any better. On his day, the Spaniard is one of the best in the world. Unfortunately, he has just as many off days as well.
Sanchez is someone who seems to rely heavily on his confidence. One or two bad games can, and often does, turn into a run of bad form. We saw it in the 25/26 season, as he went from being the PFA Fan’s Player of the Month for November to getting dropped from the starting XI in March.
So, if you want to compete for trophies, Sanchez might not be the reliable presence between the posts that you need. Will Chelsea sign a new goalkeeper this summer?
Nizaar Kinsella of BBC Sport was asked whether a proven goalkeeper like James Trafford or Mike Maignan could arrive in the summer transfer window. He said:
Chelsea are expected to go into next season with Robert Sanchez competing with Mike Penders for the number one spot.
Both are highly regarded and, although other names have been linked, any incoming goalkeeper would likely need to represent a significant upgrade for the club to change direction.
Any addition would also mean either Penders being sent out on loan or Sanchez being sold, as the club are unlikely to carry three goalkeepers of that level.
Chelsea ready to stick with their options
Mike Penders spent the season out on loan at Strasbourg and did quite well. It looks like the club are convinced he is ready to be part of the mix.
And to be honest, I can see why they might be reluctant to sign another goalkeeper at the moment. That would block the pathway for Penders.
He has been hailed as the ‘new Thibaut Courtois’. If the Belgian youngster is anywhere near as good, his development should be the priority for Chelsea rather than trying to find a decent goalkeeper to take on the first-team gloves from Sanchez.
Obviously, the jump from Ligue 1 to the Premier League is massive. It is quite possible that Penders might struggle. Early on, he is only expected to be the cup goalkeeper though, and then build from there.
Missing out on James Trafford could prove to be a mistake
Trafford is expected to be available this summer. It had looked like Man City had signed him as their new number one, only for them to bring in Gianluigi Donnarumma in the same window when the opportunity arose.
It is that kind of ambition that Chelsea have not been able to show. The constant pursuit of getting better and having the conviction to take up an opportunity when it presents itself.
The reality is that Penders might not work out. How many quality talents have we seen at Chelsea during the BlueCo era?
Trafford is proven and might solve Chelsea’s problems immediately. But it looks like the Blues are going to overlook him in hopes that they are right about one of their wonderkid signings this time around.
