Chelsea Agree Andrey Santos Sale To Manchester United

Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement to sell Andrey Santos to Manchester United in a deal worth up to £50m.

According to David Ornstein, United will pay £48m plus £2m in easily achievable bonuses for the Brazil midfielder.

Chelsea are also set to retain a 10% sell-on clause, giving the club future protection if Santos moves on again.

The agreement marks a major pure-profit-style midfield decision from Chelsea, who signed Santos from Vasco da Gama in 2023.

The 22-year-old was highly rated at Stamford Bridge, but his route to regular starts had become difficult. Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea’s wider midfield depth left Santos in an uncertain position under Xabi Alonso.

The Guardian had previously reported that Manchester United were targeting Santos, with Chelsea valuing him at around £50m.

Chelsea Secure Major Fee For Santos

The fee is the key Chelsea point.

A £48m guaranteed package, plus £2m in achievable add-ons, represents a strong return for a player who was not viewed as a certain starter.

ReadChelsea had already covered why United’s interest in Santos gave Chelsea a major midfield value call. That decision now appears to have been made.

The sell-on clause also matters. Chelsea have protected themselves against a future rise in Santos’ value, while still banking a large fee now.

There is still a sporting risk. Santos is young, athletic and technically secure enough to become a strong Premier League midfielder.

Selling him to Manchester United carries extra scrutiny. Chelsea are not moving him abroad or to a lower-pressure environment.

But the club’s midfield picture made the decision more understandable. Santos needed a clearer role, and Chelsea needed to decide whether his value was higher as a squad player or as a major sale.

At £50m, the club have chosen the market.

Alonso’s Midfield Plan Narrows

The move also sharpens Chelsea’s midfield planning under Alonso.

Caicedo remains central after signing a long-term contract. Fernandez is still one of the club’s most important players, despite recent Real Madrid noise.

Santos’ exit removes one player from a crowded group, but it also reduces Chelsea’s margin for rotation.

That places more pressure on the remaining midfield structure. Alonso will need balance, durability and clear roles before the new season begins.

For United, Santos looks like a long-term midfield investment. For Chelsea, this is a significant sale that must be judged through both finance and football.

The money is strong. The destination makes the decision harder to ignore.
