Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal for Jesse Derry to join Sporting CP on a season-long loan.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea and Sporting have reached an agreement for the 19-year-old winger to spend the 2026/27 season in Portugal.
The report states that the loan does not include an option to buy. Chelsea are also expected to cover Derry’s salary, with the player due to return in June 2027.
Derry joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace last summer. He made a strong impression in academy football and earned first-team opportunities last season.
His next step now looks set to come in Lisbon. Sporting finished second in the Portuguese top flight last season and will offer a more demanding senior environment.
Derry Gets Major Senior Step
The move gives Derry a clearer route to regular minutes. Chelsea have several wide options, so another season built around youth football would have offered limited value.
Sporting also have a natural gap to manage. Geovany Quenda is heading to Chelsea after a pre-arranged transfer, a move ReadChelsea has already covered in detail through the Quenda and Dastan Satpaev development piece.
Derry is not a direct replacement at this stage. Quenda arrives with a different profile and a bigger senior reputation.
But the loan gives Derry a chance to prove himself in a technical, attacking side. For Chelsea, it keeps control of the player while testing his readiness away from Cobham.
If the move is completed, it should be one of the more interesting academy loans of Chelsea’s summer.
