Chelsea will be looking to strengthen their roster this summer. But the first thing that has happened is that their squad has been weakened further. That is because Marc Cucurella has already completed a move to Real Madrid.
Cucurella was a regular starter for Chelsea, at least for the past two-and-a-half years. Also, he is widely recognised as one of the best left-backs in the world.
His recent form might not have been brilliant, but there is a reason Real Madrid were willing to pay €60 million to sign him. So, Chelsea have a big task on their hands, finding a replacement for the youngster.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea have come knocking on Juventus’ door for Andrea Cambiasso. The Blues have inquired about a possible transfer, as they are looking for a player to replace Cucurella.
Cambiaso linked with move to Chelsea
Obviously, this is not the first time that Cambiaso has been linked with a move to Chelsea this month. It has been happening for quite some time.
The last time around, those rumours were played down. But right now, it makes way too much sense, at least on paper.
One would imagine that Chelsea would be looking for someone with experience to take Cucurella’s place in the team. Hopefully, a player who can come in and immediately start.
Someone like Cambiaso would fit the bill. He is someone who has been a regular starter at a club like Juventus for years and has the traits to succeed at Chelsea.
Could Cambiaso work in the Premier League?
Of course, one big question mark when it comes to signing players from Serie A is whether they would be able to make the adjustment to the Premier League.
In the past, we have seen players like Kalidou Koulibaly, one of the best defenders in recent Serie A history, come to Chelsea and struggle.
The Premier League is very different to the Italian top flight when it comes to style, pace and intensity. Not everybody is capable of adjusting to that.
At the end of the day, the call should belong to Xabi Alonso and whoever he wants to take Cucurella’s spot in the team.
It has been claimed time and again that Alonso will be backed by the club in the summer transfer window and have a real say on signings. It is time to show that that is indeed going to be the case.
