Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has emerged as a possible target for Atlético Madrid as uncertainty continues over his Stamford Bridge future.
The Spanish club are reportedly considering whether to make an approach for the Argentina international, who is open to exploring a move away from Chelsea.
According to Talk Chelsea, relaying an exclusive update from Simon Phillips, Atlético are assessing whether a deal could be possible. However, no offer has been submitted and direct negotiations between the clubs have not started.
Chelsea’s valuation presents the biggest obstacle. The Blues are believed to want around £120m before considering the sale of a midfielder contracted until 2032.
Alonso wants Fernández to remain at Chelsea
Fernández’s preferred destination had been Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants publicly denied pursuing a transfer earlier this summer.
Atlético could offer the 25-year-old the opportunity to move to Madrid and join a squad containing several Argentina internationals. Diego Simeone’s style and the club’s strong South American influence may also appeal to him.
However, Atlético would need to break their transfer record or persuade Chelsea to lower their demands.
The latest report also conflicts with Xabi Alonso’s public position. The Chelsea head coach recently confirmed that he wants Fernández to stay after holding private discussions with the midfielder, as Read Chelsea reported following Alonso’s first press conference.
Fernández remains an important part of Alonso’s midfield plans, particularly following Andrey Santos’ move to Manchester United.
Atlético’s interest is currently exploratory rather than advanced. Chelsea retain control over the situation and have shown no willingness to accept a discounted offer.
