Chelsea has been home to countless world-class players over the years. Superstars like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole, Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante and numerous others have donned the blue shirt and represented the club at the highest level.
The Blues were used to competing for every trophy they played in, indifferent to the other European giants. Of course, their accolades are proof of their quality over the past couple of decades. But one thing everyone would agree on is that the club has failed to perform consistently at the highest level since the change of ownership.
Despite winning the Club World Cup by defeating PSG in the final, Chelsea have failed to build on that. Enzo Maresca was relieved of his duties midway through the season after rumours of a falling out with the ownership.
Liam Rosenior was appointed as the new manager at the start of the year, but now it seems he, too, could be shown the exit door at the end of the current campaign. Recent results haven’t been in favour of the Englishman. Chelsea have now lost four games in a row and failed to score in their last three outings. And that might just be the start of their problems.
Chelsea’s top players seemingly eyeing transfer exits
Given the tumultuous situation at the club, some of the players already seem to be considering a summer exit. Enzo Fernandez has now featured in the headlines for some time. He has even mentioned Madrid as one of the cities he would like to stay in in the near future.
That, of course, has fueled rumours of a probable move to Real Madrid during the summer. Los Blancos are also said to be interested in the Argentine and have had him on their radar since his Benfica days.
Of course, there are many who understand why Fernandez might be looking to leave. But not everybody will agree with how he has handled the situation.
Chelsea legend criticises Enzo Fernandez
Although people around the club might have some contradictory thoughts regarding Fernandez’s recent comments. John Obi Mikel has heavily criticised the midfielder on the Obi Podcast (via Daily Sports). He said:
“This is Chelsea, not a stepping stone to another club. If your heart belongs to Madrid, you shouldn’t be wearing the blue shirt. At Chelsea, we played for the badge, not for a future transfer.”
Definitely playing at Chelsea should be anything but a stepping stone for emerging talents. But BlueCo.’s recent transfer strategy of signing highly-rated youngsters seems to have backfired. Now, the players who were signed during the board’s initial days might have run out of patience with this never-ending ‘project’ because of the lack of success at the club and could be looking to leave.
