Amidst all the other issues at Chelsea currently, their problems at the back have been consistently troubling the side. Despite bringing in a number of highly-rated prospects during the past few transfer windows, the Blues have remained defensively suspect.
Unfortunately for the Blues, majority of these newcomers have failed to impress even after getting ample amount of chances over the past couple of seasons. Defence is one of the areas where you need a bit of experience.
Defenders like Jorrel Hato, Mamadou Sarr, Aaron Anselmino and numerous others have been signed. But none of them have been able to establish themselves as startes, which has put question marks over the club’s transfer policy of signing talented but inexperienced players.
With Levi Colwill’s long-term ACL injury, the Blues have failed to cope with the absence of their top centre-back as they have lost a number of their matches this season from winning positions. Marc Cucurella and Reece James have been putting up some solid displays throughout the campaign, but they have not been enough.
Cucurella has spoken out while James deals with another injury
There is some uncertainty around the future of Cucurella, who recently criticised some of BlueCo.’s decisions, including their transfer policy. Could it signal at move away from London this summer?
On the other hand James’ recent injury will be a concern for the club management as well. It had looked like the captain had put the fitness issues behind him, thanks to a successful load management regime. But now, it has cropped back up.
Incidentally, Chelsea might have the chance to sign a full-back from Inter Milan in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Chelsea handed opportunity to sign experienced full back
Now, according to TEAMtalk, Denzel Dumfries has been offered to a number of Premier League clubs this summer. Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have been spoken to.
The report also states that there is a modest £21 million release clause in his contract. Discussions are underway over a potential move away from Inter Milan.
The recent debate around the current transfer policy failing to provide results is now not only confined to the fans but a few players have also now joined them in criticising the club’s recruitment of only youngsters with little or no experience of playing in the big leagues. Only a handful of their recent signings have been able to perform according to their expectations at Stamford Bridge lately.
Dumfries might just be the player for which the BlueCo could make an exception to their transfer policy. He is a top class right-back, who is available for a relatively low asking price. That being said, it is a position where the Blues do already have two quality options. They might be better off looking to strengthen other positions.
