The international break has taken some pressure off the shoulders of Liam Rosenior. But once club football returns, it will be right back on the Chelsea manager. The Blues have lost four consecutive games. In their previous three outings, they have failed to find the back of the net. It is hard to remember the last time things had gotten this bad at Stamford Bridge.
Many had questioned the decision to bring in Liam Rosenior as Enzo Maresca’s replacement. They felt he did not have the resume for a job of this magnitude.
The only thing working in Rosenior’s favour was that he was already under the BlueCo model. But that has not been enough to succeed at Chelsea.
BlueCo need Rosenior to succeed. They have already made far too many poor decisions and put Chelsea in a position where they are struggling to compete with other top Premier League clubs. But if things don’t improve soon, they might have no other choice but to replace him, as they have done with four managers in three-and-a-half years.
Who will replace Rosenior if he is sacked?
Chelsea fans have called out for a top manager to be brought in for years. The kind of managers that the Blues used to have in the past. The likes of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel.
But if Rosenior is sacked, it is very likely that the club will go after another unproven, young manager, who would be suited to work under their model. That is the view of Matisse Armani as well. According to talkSPORT, he said on the latest episode of Inside Chelsea:
“We all know the next manager coming in after Liam Rosenior if there are any murmurs of any issues, if there is a lack of Champions League qualification, it is not going to be a top manager.
“We’re talking about Gary O’Neil at Strasbourg, are we not?
“If I were a top player, I’d be angling for a move. They don’t support Chelsea, they have their own careers, they have to be selfish.
“The board has shown already they will be quite selfish in terms of how quickly they’ll chop and change the players.
“The players will leave and therefore you see your teammates leave so ruthlessly, you have every right to move the same way.”
Chelsea fans won’t be happy if Gary O’Neil is the club’s next manager
It would be safe to say that someone like O’Neil would be another underwhelming appointment for Chelsea. And it would be another step in the club losing the identity that they had built up over the past two-plus decades.
Is O’Neil the type of manager that you would bring in to win trophies? He has never won anything as a manager. So, there is that.
Like Roseior, O’Neil is part of the BlueCo model though. He is currently the Strasbourg manager and is doing a decent enough job as they sit at eighth in Ligue 1. But Chelsea have to be aiming higher than that, especially after what feels like four wasted seasons since the takeover.
Now, players have stared to call out the BlueCo model as well. Marc Cucurella was the latest to do so. Will it lead to some changes in the strategy? Or will the ownership just decide to double down and part ways with those who don’t agree with their methods? We could learn a lot about where Chelsea are headed as a club this summer.
