Chelsea’s season so far has been one of those which they would love to to get over with as soon as possible and then concentrate on the next campaign. Unfortunately, this was not supposed to happen after it had looked like the club were finally moving in the right direction. They won the Club World Cup in the summer. They also clinched the Conference Leaue and secured Champions League qualification last season.
But the Blues decided to part ways with Enzo Maresca on New Year’s day after a series of poor results. There were also rumours of a falling out with the ownership. The management then decided to bring in Liam Rosenior on a long-term contract from Stratsbourg.
Despite making a bright start under the Englishman, the Blues are seemingly back to square one. They currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa after losing four games in a row.
Now as it seems, Maresca was not the problem at Stamford Bridge. The club’s recent downfall is a combination of some major shortcomings at different levels.
Chelsea have had a goalkeeper problem since Thibaut Courtois left
One of Chelsea’s problems has been the club’s inability to finish strongly from winning positions in quite a few games this season. That is largely due to the lack of quality defenders in the squad. But the lack of consistency from the two goalkeepers, Filip Jorgensen and Robert Sanchez, cannot be overlooked either.
As a result, the Blues are expected to head into the summer transfer window looking for a more consistent goalkeeper in order to strengthen their last line of defence.
It has been a problem area for them ever since Thibaut Courtois left for Real Madrid in 2018. They have signed plenty of goalies since then, without every finding a long-term solution.
Links emerge with AS Roma goalkeeper
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), AS Roma, due to financial fair play worries, need to sanction a transfer exit by June 30th. Manu Kone, Wesley and Evan Ndicka are in the mix to depart the club, but there is belief that Mile Svilar could also leave. Chelsea are one of the clubs interested, alongside Newcastle United.
The goalkeeper moved to Roma on a free transfer from Benfica in 2022. The Serbian international has been an integral part of their team since then. He has already made 125 appearances for the club. He has kept 13 clean sheets in the league this season, as they have the second-best defence in Serie A.
Both Jorgensen and Sanchez has given some great performances during the ongoing campaign. But the duo have lacked consistency, have a habit of making errors and have cost the Blues crucial matches.
Svilar is known for his sharp reflexes and shot-stopping abilities. His distribution is not phenomenal but it is above average. He is not someone who makes a lot of errors either, which will come as a relief to Chelsea fans.
With the 26-year-old’s contract set to expire in 2030, Roma would definitely hold an upper hand when the transfer talks take place. They would be reluctant to let him go for less than €50 million. Chelsea’s Champions League status for next season could be the key in convincing the Serbian.
In 2018, Liverpool signed a goalkeeper from AS Roma who proved to be an integral part of their golden era under Jurgen Klopp and will go down as one of the best in Premier League. Will Chelsea try to do the same this summer?
