Chelsea continue to search for their next permanent head coach as Calum McFarlane remains in interim charge until the end of what has been a terrible season. Coming into it, it had finally looked like the BlueCo project was on the right track. But it has fallen apart over the past nine months or so. Largely due to the management’s errors.
Instead of signing quality talents last summer, when they were primed to go to the next level after the Club World Cup win, BlueCo once again continued to bring in youngsters. None of them has had any real impact.
Enzo Maresca chose to leave in the middle of the season due to disagreements behind the scenes. The decision to hire Liam Rosenior proved to be one of the worst in club history. And now, Chelsea are back to square one. In fact, considering the money that has been invested, they might be a few squares behind where they started.
Now, Chelsea absolutely need to get their next managerial appointment right. And one of the names most fans would like to see get the post is Xabi Alonso. There seems to be an interesting update regarding that.
AC Milan wanted Xabi Alonso but it looks like he is headed to Chelsea
It appears that AC Milan are another club that wanted to bring in Alonso as their manager. But it appears that he might be headed for Chelsea after all.
According to Carlo Pellegatti on his YouTube channel (via Sempre Milan):
“If Max were to leave, the candidate would be Italiano, who is rumoured to be leaving Bologna. The coach who Milan liked as an alternative to Allegri – a thought from a few months ago – is Xabi Alonso.
“But he seems destined for Chelsea. When it was said that Furlani made a trip to Düsseldorf last year, it was precisely to sound out Xabi Alonso.”
That will be music to the ears of Chelsea fans. From all the candidates whose names have been listed in the media, Alonso is the one with the best track record. He won the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal with Bayer Leverkusen and was a final away from doing the treble.
Just hiring Xabi Alonso won’t solve all of Chelsea’s problems
Is Alonso a good manager? Yes. Will he solve all of Chelsea’s problems? No. The issues lie much deeper than that.
Chelsea need a change in their way of thinking more than anything else. If Alonso is brought in and they continue to sign just unproven youngsters, overlook the need for experience and proven quality, and fail to build a rapport with the fanbase, then it will head nowhere once again.
Alonso needs to have a big say when it comes to football operations at the club. He needs to be the main man when it comes to signing off on transfers. He needs to have the same role that Pep Guardiola has at Manchester City. And then maybe, just maybe, this could finally work out.
